Timeout problem with SAP Automation GUI

I am using automation GUI as an interface between VB and SAP. What I need is a way to check and see if a SAPEvent connection has timed out. Checking the connected property of the SAPEvent doesn't work. It continues to return TRUE even after the connection has timed out. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
