: Does anyone know how many R/2 installations are still in us throughout the world?
As per June 1, 2001: 644 SAP R/2 installations worldwide used operationally [= not retrieval only], of which 70% in Germany; 1080 SAP R/2 Installations have been completely replaced by SAP R/3 or mySAP.com; the 644 SAP R/2 installations used operationally also include installations, which have mostly been replaced by SAP R/3 or mySAP.com (e.g. for most of the "clients" [MANDT], or for all functions but a minimal rest-usage). Due to the many R/2-R/3-mySAP.com migrations currently running, the number of SAP R/2 installations used operationally is expected to drop to 200 by the end of next year; The number of SAP R/2 installations is expected to be close to zero by mid/end of 2004 [source: SAP's 1:1 R/2 customer surveys].
Maintenance for some SAP R/2 components has already ended; maintenance for further SAP R/2 components ends on Dec. 2001; maintenance for all country/language specifics but German / US-American ends Dec. 2003 (for some country/language specifics already ended or will end before that date); maintenance for further SAP R/2 components may end before end of 2004; maintenance for all remaining SAP R/2 components ends December 2004 [SAP R/2 will be a quarter century old by then]. SAP will not and cannot provide maintenance services for SAP R/2 after 2004. After 2004 there won't be enough qualified resources available to support SAP R/2 [more than 20 million lines of highly integrated and cross-dependent assembler code and SAP-macro-assembler-code per release/correction level grown over decades].
