Come back R2 all is forgiven. R3 performance is rubbish

Please keep R2 going ---even if functionality is not quite at R3 levels.
As one who has worked on both systems -- I love the R3 front ends rather than the text based main frame stuff and the ease of integration with EXCEL, Word4W, ACCESS, C++,JAVA,VBASIC etc but after being weaned on MVS I still recoil at the idea of jobs runnning for 3 days or backups lasting more than a week as is now possible on large multi system R3 sites.
The cost is not as cheap as you think compared with R2 and security is a crock of sh--te ---- Any LINUX boot disk can fiddle around with Windows NT/W2k via chntpw utility. R2 at least has RACF or ACF/2 security which is almost impossible to break.
If R2 is given a decent front end it could continue indefinitely and I defy anybody to say W2K network performance is better than running IBM's IMS. (A decent UNIX system might be different however but you need large enough boxes to run it on)
