An opportunity with Dofasco has arisen for me. They would like to implement a workplace management system.
I've been informed by several of my collegues that a product called: "YORVIK", is one of the best for workplace management, scheduling, inventory control, admin. services, and bulk loading.
Could you comment of that? Have you ever heard of the product?
I understand that Bethlehem Steel uses the YORVIK product and that they are very happy with it!

Subject: SAP / CICS problem ?
Hi All !,
Has anyone out there ever encountered this problem that I'm
having with entering text on an input screen from an ABAP pgm ?
When the text entered starts with "C/A" or "S/A" etc., the abap
seems to not accept the text, because after posting and then dis-
playing the order later, the text is nowhere to be found ! It seems to me that text that starts with "C/A" or anything with a
"/" as the 2nd char. gets translated to a CICS/BMS command ? The
thing that puzzles me is that it doesn't happen all the time. But
it does happen often enough to warrant a modification someplace.
Anyone know anything about this ?
Thanks,
Dutchred

Why does the Sap system give Vendor 1 a lower evaluation grade then Vendor 2 ?
Is it possible in Sap MM module to re-arrange these settings so, that Vendor 1 gets a higher score than Vendor 2.

Nathan,
You can transfer files from SAP R/2 to a spreadsheet (say Excel), but the process is not very simple.
The best way (that I have found) to do this is to run the ABAP using some JCL and create the file in TSO (not online in the Spool). You can then use the interface software that you connect to the MainFrame with to transfer the TSO File to your network or hard drive. If you save it as a .txt file you can then load it into Excel using the text import wizard (this will appear automatically when you try to load the text file into Excel) to set the column widths of your report.
Unfortunately, I can not help you to do this automatically each week. You can set the ABAP to run automatically using OPC, but transfering it to Excel may have to be done manually. Once mastered the process doesn't take that long!
Drop me an e-mail (guy.williamson@btinternet.com) if you want some more help.

Subject: RV: Add items in the middle of the order
In our present sales order system we communicate with the customer (forwarded offer, order confirmation, packaging list, invoice etc.) with the customer using the same item numbers as they uses in the requests or in the orders placed with us.
Our customers want the items in numerical order (0001 – 0002 etc.) and not with a number increment at 10 (0010 – 0020 etc.)
To keep our items identical to the customers seems to be a rather difficult task in SAP R/2 as the functionality - as we seen it - does not support such a feature.
In our search for functionality we therefore have three questions:
1) Is there a possibility in an existing request/order to add one or more items in the middle of the order?
2) Is it possible in the copy function to secure that the result end at specified free items?
3) Is it possible to renumber the items after having added or deleted items from the order, so that the order items afterwards are numbered continuously.

Subject: Re: RV: Add items in the middle of the order
Dorthe,
You can alter the numbering of items in an Order by use of Table 183A. There are two fields (T183A-SHPOS - Main Items and T183A-SUPOS - Sub Items) which control how items in Orders are numbered. T183A is governed by Order Type. You can set the increment to any number between 1 and 99. Setting these fields to 01 (instead of 10 as I suspect they are at the moment) will number any items sequentially.
As for 'inserting' items into an order, I do not think you can do this. The only way that I can think of reordering items is to delete the original order and then create a new order, adding items in the required sequence.
I hope that this helps ....
Cheers,
Guy

There are very very few diferences between R2 ABAP and R3 ABAP! Those that do exist tend to deal with the GUI interface of R3. I.e. there are some minor differences in commands such as 'Select-Options' and 'Parameters', but these tend to deal with putting borders around groups of parameters / select options and are not to do with the actual code itself.
Also, R3 has different table names / structures to R2 (no real differentiation in table type, i.e. ATAB or POOL etc) but this takes no time at all to adapt to.
There are some extensions in R3 which deal with new SAP developments, but these are a natural progression from R2 and should pose no problems.
In fact the most tricky thing about moving from R2 ABAP to R3 ABAP is convincing the potential employer that there are no real differences!

I fully agree with Mr.Guy Williamson. I had worked in SAP R/2 systems, designing and developing in R/2, versions 4.4c and 5.0F and converting ABAP programs from SAP R/2 4.4c to SAP R/2 5.0f.
I found that the difference in ABAP in SAP R/2 5.0f from that of SAP R/2 4.4c is much greater than the difference in SAP R/2 5.0f and SAP R/3 version 3.1h.
One important thing that i noticed while programming in R/3 systems is the performance of the ABAP programs. While working in R/2 system, one invariably use Logical databases but in R/3 systems, one invariably access the DB tables directly ! There are significant advantage in both, but one has to know those advantages and use it to good effect.
In R/3 systems, since we access the tables directly, we need to look at the size of the table, the available indices, the access mechanism and the keys invloved in accessing the DB tables else the program will be significantly slowed down !!
Like for instance, accessing the BSEG, one has the access this table only when one knows the Document number and the company code else it's going to stress the system enormously !!
This situation is avoided in R/3 systems by the usage of LDB's (Logical databases). LDB's are quite useful in R/3 system as well when we go into programming in AM module ! Usage of logical databases in FM for instance is not that advisable as we read unnecessary data at times !!
The other difference I noticed is in BDC interface programming.
In the R/2 system we fill the screen fields directly and use command "Transfer Dynpro" but in R/3 systems we use a BDC table to fill in the data and pass it to a Function Module which fills the screen fields !! Moreover in the R/3 systems, versions 3.1H and higher have BDC recording feature (Which is not available in R/2 systems atleast till R/2 version 5.0f), which significantly reduces the time we take to identify the screen field names !!
This difference however is very minor ! One can adapt to it in a day !
I certainly feel that an ABAPer moving over from R/2 to R/3 has to take note of the performance of the programs in R/3, more significantly than anything else !
All said and done, i fully agree with Mr.Guy Williamson, in the fact that the differences are quite a natural progression and the main difficulty lies in convincing the potential employer to accept one's R/2 skills in R/3 environment ! I have experienced that difficuly myself and hence the total acknowledgment of Mr. Guy Williamson's views.
cheers,
Senthil.

Dear Mark:
I do not know of any. You will probably have to write the transactions or function calls yourself. But if it helps any, I know that the MQ Series is a popular way to interface to and from R2, especially on an IBM mainframe with VSAM files. If I remember correctly, you can have the MQ Series do the transport of the data through a logical 'pipeline' AND you can kick off a program to process that data (ABAP inbound and whatever language outbound). This is very generic though, and you would have to do the IDOC/EDI/Posting tasks (storing, validating, tracking status, calling transactions, ...) yourself. Maybe someone else will give you more feedback on this one.

Wolfgang

Subject: Re: R2 ABAP vs R3 ABAP
: : There are very very few diferences between R2 ABAP and R3 ABAP! Those that do exist tend to deal with the GUI interface of R3. I.e. there are some minor differences in commands such as 'Select-Options' and 'Parameters', but these tend to deal with putting borders around groups of parameters / select options and are not to do with the actual code itself.
: : Also, R3 has different table names / structures to R2 (no real differentiation in table type, i.e. ATAB or POOL etc) but this takes no time at all to adapt to.
: : There are some extensions in R3 which deal with new SAP developments, but these are a natural progression from R2 and should pose no problems.
: : In fact the most tricky thing about moving from R2 ABAP to R3 ABAP is convincing the potential employer that there are no real differences!
: I fully agree with Mr.Guy Williamson. I had worked in SAP R/2 systems, designing and developing in R/2, versions 4.4c and 5.0F and converting ABAP programs from SAP R/2 4.4c to SAP R/2 5.0f.
: I found that the difference in ABAP in SAP R/2 5.0f from that of SAP R/2 4.4c is much greater than the difference in SAP R/2 5.0f and SAP R/3 version 3.1h.
: One important thing that i noticed while programming in R/3 systems is the performance of the ABAP programs. While working in R/2 system, one invariably use Logical databases but in R/3 systems, one invariably access the DB tables directly ! There are significant advantage in both, but one has to know those advantages and use it to good effect.
: In R/3 systems, since we access the tables directly, we need to look at the size of the table, the available indices, the access mechanism and the keys invloved in accessing the DB tables else the program will be significantly slowed down !!
: Like for instance, accessing the BSEG, one has the access this table only when one knows the Document number and the company code else it's going to stress the system enormously !!
: This situation is avoided in R/3 systems by the usage of LDB's (Logical databases). LDB's are quite useful in R/3 system as well when we go into programming in AM module ! Usage of logical databases in FM for instance is not that advisable as we read unnecessary data at times !!
: The other difference I noticed is in BDC interface programming.
: In the R/2 system we fill the screen fields directly and use command "Transfer Dynpro" but in R/3 systems we use a BDC table to fill in the data and pass it to a Function Module which fills the screen fields !! Moreover in the R/3 systems, versions 3.1H and higher have BDC recording feature (Which is not available in R/2 systems atleast till R/2 version 5.0f), which significantly reduces the time we take to identify the screen field names !!
: This difference however is very minor ! One can adapt to it in a day !
: I certainly feel that an ABAPer moving over from R/2 to R/3 has to take note of the performance of the programs in R/3, more significantly than anything else !
: All said and done, i fully agree with Mr.Guy Williamson, in the fact that the differences are quite a natural progression and the main difficulty lies in convincing the potential employer to accept one's R/2 skills in R/3 environment ! I have experienced that difficuly myself and hence the total acknowledgment of Mr. Guy Williamson's views.
:
: cheers,
: Senthil.
Hi there - the main difference of course is not so much in the actual ABAP stuff -- given a decent set of specs a competent programmer could probably code an abap whatever his (preferably SAP!!) background, but in the actual mechanics and philosophy of getting the job done. R2 stuff tends to be traditionally more Text based wheras R3 applications often have a more graphical format. Output reporting (SAPSCRIPT) etc tends to be a real cludge in R2 - you need all sorts of tricks to get over the traditional MVS/JES2 standard line printer output to get any decent type of output. Also tools such as EXCEL via WS_UPLOAD and WS_download are used much more and also interactively. Similarly drill down reporting via mouse double clicks is common and getting and retrieving data sets via FTP is the norm rather than the exception.
In addition R3 makes very little use of "Logical Databases" but extensive use of relational SQL sets. Particularly from Rel 4.0 onwards data base joins and object oriented programming are a significant enhancement to R3 abap. R2 dynpros are very different from R3 which makes batch programming rather more tricky in R3.
Finally the horrendous nature of JCL does not exist in R3.
In short if I were an employer I would have no problems about using someone with R3 experience on an R2 project (although the programmer might feel frustrated at the lack of facilities in R2) but I would think very seriously about taking an R2 guy on for an R3 role.

Dear Karen:
... too many to list. The basic ones are:
- Platform: R/2 is typically on a mainframe, R/3 on a Workstation
- Code: R/2 is typically in EBCDIC, R/3 in ASCII/
- Language: R/2 typically uses assembly programs for stuff outside of ABAP, R/3 uses C.
- Techniques: A lot of techniques (Screen I/O, BDC, jobs, ...) are different in R/2 and usually easier to deal with in R/3.
- CTS: There is no correction and transportation system in R/2.
- R/2 is typically faster (one of the few good things about R/2)
- Commands: Some commands are not supported in the other system (e.g., the GET SEGMENT is unique to R/2).

We are an IMS DC/DB company and experience problems with the SEKI DB. This file is getting close to 4gig and we reorg it every month. The problem is partially caused by not running the RM reorg process and/or other reorg processes, because of 'business requirements' .....
We researched the problem and we are in the process of converting the DB to HISAM, which will create 2 4gig files (data + index), because of the key definition. Once that's done we install a product called PDF to split the DB into an x number of partions, reload the DB based on a high key definition in the DBD. My questions to the board : Did one of you R/2 basis people tried to alter the SYGU definitions with respect to freespace, record lenght (DDIC = 100, SYGU says 110 !) or imbed statements ?

But do you have any idea, how to trigger this module, if a value is passed to the field by previous screen processing? Dear Anirudha:
If the field was on the previous screen, it should have been validated there already, so you would not have to go through the module. If you need to go through it regardless, you may need to change the ON CHAIN. If you want to call the module occasionally, but usually ON CHAIN is OK, you can have the module call a form:
MODULE x...
PERFORM y...
ENDMODULE.
FORM y...
(...)
ENDFORM.
Then you can perform y directly where you need it, e.g., from another module or inside your processing.

Wolfgang

Subject: R2 to R3 Migration - LSM (Legacy System Migration) Tool
Hi there we are in the process of migrating a number of legacy systems to R3 rel 4.6. We are also migrating our entire R2 system to MM, PP, SD and PM. While some of the stuff can be moved directly from R2 to R3 using IDOC's I wonder if anybody out there has experience of using the LSM. One of the horrible things of R3 compared with R2 is the sheer lack of power on the servers compared with the mainframe. Any ideas about the time it might take to load Material Master recs - around 500,000 together with their info recs and texts = to say nothing of open PO's and MRP stuff. My gut feel is that including backing up the system at various points to save re-starting the whole exercise again if it fails Material Master load could take between 1 and 2 weeks. Anyone with actual experience out there - glad of some info.
Thanks

Brandon,
It works through WebRFC. Basically your browser is communicating through SAP's webserver and ITS by RFC to your R2 system.
You need component 48 and 82, rel level 50f or higher, IBM SNA gateway which support LU6.2
I have a complete document about the webrfc. Drop me a note and I will forward the document.

Well, in R/3 all the ABAP/4 programs are client independant and can be seen and run from any client. One can even execute programs directly from transaction SE38, provided he has got appropriate authorizations to do so. What we do to restrict this is we don't provide rights for end users to execute the programs from SE38. I hope this is what you wnated to know and if I am mistaken please forgive me for I am quite an alien to R/2 and hence my question.

Subject: SAP Archiving setup with FileNET
We have an operational environment for 2 Years+ now and have encountered the following problem :
When trying to communicate with FileNet for Archiving we are unable to pass files to the archive system. The problem stems from the fact that the Logical System Name has NOT been maintained in the Transaction SCC4. Can you help us assess the implications of adding a value to this field to enable the archive process to work ?

R/2 is the father ( or mother ) of R/3. In fact, it is the main-frame version of R/3. Developped in the mid-seventies is was the first integrated standard realtime-software. R/2 will be supported by SAP until 2004.
All companies using R/2 ( still some hundred or thousand in Europe and worldwide ) have to migrate to R/3 at that time or to live ( or survive ) with a not supported system.
But perhaps this is the hour of all the consultants ( like me, working with R/2 since 22 years !!! ) .

--> HI, Fr.
If you are still interested in an answer to your question, please tell me exactly where your problem is ??
Are you shure, that it is a R/2-problem, because clients in R/2 only have 2 digits and not 3 as in your question (090 ??? ) ??
Just some notes: ABAPs in an multi-client R/2-system are normally maintained in client 00. Then you can submit these reports in all clients. But you can only change them in client 00.

I'm not sure what you are asking, but you can transport any ABAP from one mandant to an other by changing it manually in table TRDIR. CAUTION ! Be very careful when you do that, a mistake is easily made. I've written an ABAP to do that, which is pretty simple to do. ABAP's are in R2 client dependent, UNLESS you move the ABAP to mandant 00, which make them clieint independent.

Hallo,
Very simple and short. R3 has in essence the same concept as R2. The transactions are named different and it's windows driven.
R3 is client-server based and uses a RDMS, where R2 is mainframe driven with a hierarchical DB or RDMS. The R2 kernel is assembler and ABAP. ABAP is more or less the same. I'm working with both and I must say I'm impressed with R3, but I did not expected any thing less as in my opinion R2 is/was an awesome product.

Hallo,
Mark, I would suggest to check wit SAP or OSS. We ran into the same issue for IMS DC/DB. As far a the SAP customer letters were indicating, no need to upgrade IMS. We did upgraded IMS, but for other reasons. ADABAS would not be any different. SAP's major concern is the SAP R2 kernel and online functionality. (for R2-R3 migration purposes )
SAP customers letters is available on their website @ www.sap.com/R2

Hallo,
Mark, I worked with the PBS product before and I can tell you that it's a pretty good product. We do not use it for the KOEP (Line items cost acc.) but only for B type documents and store the archived data in a PBS database which is online available.
PBS is basically using SAP's reorganization process and extract/reformat the output file from the KOEP reorg into a format they use to load their PBS database. The archived data AND current data is online available via the PBS transactions.
Hope this helps,

You can copy ABAP's to any client you want with the standard report RSAMANDU. If an ABAP is moved to client 000 (see TRDIR), it can be executed from any client, otherwise it can only be started in the client it resides.

You can use following functions to transfer data from R/2 to R/3
- Transfer the data via an abap with the 'TRANSFER'-command into a sequential file on the mainframe and FTP this file to your R/3 application server. Read the data with 'READ DATASET' in R/3
- Use a remote function call with CALL FUNCTION 'xxx' DESTINATION yyy, where yyy is your R/3-destination, defined in table TRFC.
- Depending on your releases, you can use Idoc's.

Aldo is correct, this will work if all you are required to do is transfer data from R2 to R3. If you are required to extract data from the R2 databases it could get more complicated. You could get into a situation where you will need to know the structure of the R2 databases to map the data. And if it happends to be one of those rare IMS R2 systems you might be required to build DBD's and PSB's. Some clients may want you to run the ABAPs and FTP in batch as well, which might require JCL. If you don't have any R2 experience then I would recommend that you find some good R2 folks that you can rely on for advice.

Dana, I am not aware of any training or books available that will assist this person in switching from R/3 to R/2. Without trying to sound too discouraging I would caution you that R/2 is a much different animal than R/3, and it will require some mainframe skills as well as R/2 training. For functional work this might not be too difficult to pick up but if this person is an ABAP developer he/she might want to look at getting an overview of JCL and DB2, IMS or VSAM processing. You will probably find that the best source for training will be the new client/employer.

There are a few solutions to your problem :
- Take a look at the "field-symbols" and the "assign" instructions (help assign in abap-editor)
- You could write an abap which generates the necessary coding and call this newly created abap.

I'm trying to install SAP LDAP gateway under WinNT. But, lot of files missing and I can not find them, I also don't know the rigth way to do that, I guess I must install the gateway first, the interface and then create my destination and so.
Please if anybody did already that, doesn't matter the environment.
Thanks in advance

Hi Paddy,
As far as I am aware....SAP tables cannot be defined dynamically in the ABAP.
Not even with field-symbols.
There may be a chance that internal table may be...but the chances are very remote...
SAP R/2 demands explicit sequential reads on ATABS, DB tabs etc.
No wonder if it was possible to assing tables dynamically, we could very well export the entire table to memory and import the contents...directly into an internal table...or otherwise...

I believe you have to setup an RFC server (remote function call), which is similar to R/3. I am not sure how complete is this functionality in R/2, but there is no harm in trying out.

The cost is not as cheap as you think compared with R2 and security is a crock of sh--te ---- Any LINUX boot disk can fiddle around with Windows NT/W2k via chntpw utility. R2 at least has RACF or ACF/2 security which is almost impossible to break.
If R2 is given a decent front end it could continue indefinitely and I defy anybody to say W2K network performance is better than running IBM's IMS. (A decent UNIX system might be different however but you need large enough boxes to run it on)

: Does anyone know how many R/2 installations are still in us throughout the world?
As per June 1, 2001: 644 SAP R/2 installations worldwide used operationally [= not retrieval only], of which 70% in Germany; 1080 SAP R/2 Installations have been completely replaced by SAP R/3 or mySAP.com; the 644 SAP R/2 installations used operationally also include installations, which have mostly been replaced by SAP R/3 or mySAP.com (e.g. for most of the "clients" [MANDT], or for all functions but a minimal rest-usage). Due to the many R/2-R/3-mySAP.com migrations currently running, the number of SAP R/2 installations used operationally is expected to drop to 200 by the end of next year; The number of SAP R/2 installations is expected to be close to zero by mid/end of 2004 [source: SAP's 1:1 R/2 customer surveys].
Maintenance for some SAP R/2 components has already ended; maintenance for further SAP R/2 components ends on Dec. 2001; maintenance for all country/language specifics but German / US-American ends Dec. 2003 (for some country/language specifics already ended or will end before that date); maintenance for further SAP R/2 components may end before end of 2004; maintenance for all remaining SAP R/2 components ends December 2004 [SAP R/2 will be a quarter century old by then]. SAP will not and cannot provide maintenance services for SAP R/2 after 2004. After 2004 there won't be enough qualified resources available to support SAP R/2 [more than 20 million lines of highly integrated and cross-dependent assembler code and SAP-macro-assembler-code per release/correction level grown over decades].

My customer met with SAP reps from Waldorf this week to discuss R/2 to R/3 migration (a long-term strategy). In the short-term, we're meant to be upgrading 50F to 60J before the end of the year.
During the presentation SAP presented a slide which showed that, of the 600+ R/2 customers remaining, there were only 2 on 6.0J, while 5.0J had over 50 customers.
Should we continue towards a 6.0J implementation, or a 5.0J implementation ?
1. What additional frunctionality so we get in 6.0J that is not in 5.0J ?
2. Are we likely to make use of the functionality, given that we currently have no performance issues ?
3. What is the additional cost of implementing 6.0J over and above 5.0J ?
4. What impact on the project schedule would it have if we were to upgrade to 5.0J and not 6.0J ?

There are no different tapes for 5.0J and 6.0J. The 6.0J functionality is implemented but not activated. Therefore the additional work is to activate the 6.0J function.
There's no special activation manual for 6.0J but the 6.0I manual can be used for this purpose.

The migration tool (tx DMIG) is a free of charge tool, SAP offers to migrate from R/2 to R/3. You have to order your version at your local SAP-support center. You then can install the two components (one on R/2, one on R/3-side). An alternative is LSMW (Legacy System Migration Workbench), which you can download at service.sap.com/lsmw. Installation is done only on R/3-side. If you need more info, please feel free to contact me.

R2 and R3 follow similar prinicples. BDC lets you run a job in background (or batch in the R2 MVS case) that creates a batch of transactions. The major purpose we use it for (on R2) is to interface with other systems.
An R2 example, to update names and addresses: We read an MVS dataset, and use the data to create a series of PA31s
basic requrements. You can execute this batch from transaction SBDC, or in R2's case, useing T1SA and a BATCH / CICS interface.
You need to:

Hello,
does anybody in this community know how I can easily extract data from RIVA for use in data warehouses (and especially in SAP BW). Are there any ETL-Tools supporting RIVA ?
I suppose the typical way for RIVA is to write data extractions in ABAP to create some kind of flatfiles.
Are there any other ideas ?

: Hi there we are in the process of migrating a number of legacy systems to R3 rel 4.6.

Subject: Re: CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN R/3 AND R/2 PLEASE ...........
Hi,
Basically, R/2 is mainframe, R/3 is client/server.
In R/2, you have a mainframe architecture running MVS operating system for example so one machine connected to terminals with very limited memory (only some screen memory). All operations are done on the mainframe. Most of the programs (transactions) are written in assembler, not in ABAP. Reporting is done in ABAP. Some transaction are written in ABAP. ABAP in R/2 v5.0 is similar to ABAP in R/3 v3.0. In R/2 you have only text, no graphics.
In R/3, you have client/server architecture (Database server, application server and presentation server). But you know that already I guess.

Olivier

: Hallo,
: Very simple and short. R3 has in essence the same concept as R2. The transactions are named different and it's windows driven.
: R3 is client-server based and uses a RDMS, where R2 is mainframe driven with a hierarchical DB or RDMS. The R2 kernel is assembler and ABAP. ABAP is more or less the same. I'm working with both and I must say I'm impressed with R3, but I did not expected any thing less as in my opinion R2 is/was an awesome product.

But when you remove the last but one session, ie the first modi off the base session, the itole event -New_Session stops firing.
I've tried putting loads of getevents around to see if that helps but to no avail.
The sessions are created and destroyed using the SendMenName method with System and then Create session or End session.

Subject: R2 Upgrade - abend in SAPTHCI
I am attempting bring up my SAP R/2 60J system (CICS/DB2/MVS) for the first time. D1SI START / D1SI VSTP / D1SI VSTR / D1SA STOP all work OK.
However, when I go D1SA, I get:
A005 Program phase cannot be loaded
There's enough space in the message for a program name, but this is blank. R2 Oss isn't much help - libraries and assemblies are correct. Any ideas ?

I'm part of a team that supports R2 on an MVS mainframe, CICS/DB2. We also support multiple R/3 customers and sites (2.2E up to 4.6D)
First off, - a bit of history :- I've been told that R3 1.x was a port from MVS to UNIX (rather than a rewrite).
A gross generalisation is that the more recent the R3 system, the more tasks are done via the SAPGUI, rather than requiring someone (usually BASIS) to logon to the Operating System. Examples include transports and parameters (whats now RZ10).
By comparison, under R2 a lot of what you're used to using the GUI for (even in R3 2.2 systems) is back in the operating system. The background tasks run in MVS batch jobs, so creating running and monitoring background jobs etc requires basic knowledge of (at our installation) MVS/TSO. The BASIS people tend to be ex mainframe sysprogs / mainframe dbas; Its not so important for developers.
And of course, most (if not all) R/2 sits access the online system via dumb-terminal emulators; there is no 'SAPGUI' equivalent used. Its available, but I've never seen or heard of its regular use.
Functionally, the high-level concepts are similar. For example, Authorisations, SQL, logical databases etc all exist, but in a rudimentary fashion compared to what you're used to. ABAP is a bit more restictive (no push-buttons etc). You need to be running a spcific 3270-emulator that enables PC-Connect to download from within an ABAP. Even many of the field names and table names are the same; There's just names that DONT match to confuse you.
In short, our ABAPers don't like working on R/2, because the interface is clunky, and ugly, but they cope with swapping beteen the two quite easily.
BTW, a good tip.... I'm not au-fait with the functional side of things, but from the basis view-point, transactions map quite simply....
R3 SE08 --> R2 TM08
R3 SE38 --> R2 TM38
etc

The text file is usually reorganized in connection with the corresponding master file or document reorganization.
If you're already doing this (SAPB80U etc), try an unload / delete / redefine / reload ($SAPUNLU / delete / define / $SAPRELU) of the TEXT database. If you don't do the delete (or DROP for DB2) and redefine (or CREATE for DB2), you won't necessarily get the space back - depending on your file system or DB2 release, it may just reuse the existing space allocation.

Subject: Re: Learning curve from R/3 to R/2
Timothy,
Martin said it as well as it could be put, but I will express my thoughts anyway.
To work in the R2 environment you must have mainframe skills. MVS, TSO, JCL, DB2/CICS and possibly IMS. You should plan on throwing away the mouse, drill down menus and all the fun GUI stuff too.
Years ago I was hired onto an R2 to R3 conversion project where the R3 folks had none of the above skills and therefore could not develop code to extract the data from R2. The system happened to be one of the rare IMS R2 systems so we also had to deal with DBA related items such as building DBDs and PSBs for the new programs.
Your basic ABAP logic will be very similar although you will need to become familiar with the database access methods such as using logical databases and the 'GET' statement in your ABAP code. You will find that there is no programming assistance such as 'drag and drop' and easy to use menu painters, so all your screen processing will have to be developed by you.
If you have experience with these mainframe tools then you should not have any problem converting back otherwise you should find a mentor that you can rely on for help.
Best of Luck
Keith
