What approaches have been used to map out the use of company 'divisions' for logistics reporting within SAP R/3?

Say for example:

Group = Big Company (the Client in SAP)

Division = Northern (the CO area???? in SAP)

Company = Company A (the Company Code in SAP)

Plant = Plant A1 (the Plant in SAP)

Storage Location = Main Store (Storage Location in SAP)

From a logistics reporting requirement we have considered using a display variant using a grouping of company codes via the 'variables' functionality, ie define this once and it can be used across all standard 'list' displays.

It is a requirement however to display list reports showing 'division', i.e. purchase orders across the group by division and company code.

Could we use the Controlling Area to represent division in this context (this would mean that all company codes within the division would be allocated to the same controlling area and would use the same chart of accounts)

Please help!!
