Leg indicators used in Shipment Stages

Can someone clarify the differences amongst all the leg indicators used in the stages of a shipment?

1 = Preliminary Leg
2 = Main Leg
3 = Subsequent
4 = Direct
5 = Return

We are thinking of having various processes when delivering freight to our customers and it will require flexibility on the stages. Creating a new shipment type will not help; therefore, the user will have to manually define the stages.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
