Serial number and external number on equipment

Hello.
I assign serial numbers through goods movements with an automatic creation of equipment. SAP always choose the next internal number for the equipment (EQUNR), and I want to manage an external number on this equipment.
How can I stop SAP during this processus to allow me to manage my own equipment number ?
