How to get started with BAPIs

hi,
recently , i have started working on BAPIs. Can i use an existing business object type for creating a new BAPI. once i have created a new business object type. i am not able to create methods for it. and , where should we declare our parameters. is it necessary , that the parameters should be fields of the BAPI structures.
