It may be the case that the user has not completed the task properly.

Workitems can be executed (e.g. a workitem to create an invoice), but, unless the user actually creates an invoice, the status will not change.

OK, but let's assume that the user has completed the task correctly; the problem would most likely be that a termination event hasn't been raised correctly for that workitem.

Check the event log (transaction SWEL - remember to activate first!) for termination events - you should see an error message if there has been a problem (double click on pertinent line).

If no termination event is raised, check your event bindings (through PFTC), also check whether any short-dumps are occuring (ST22); failing that, check that the RFC destination user (WF-BATCH) has been configured correctly in transaction SWU3.
