download to presentation server in background

Postby newcomer » Fri Apr 04, 2003 2:10 am

Is there anyway to download a file to the presentation server in a background job. I am pretty sure the answer is no I just want to confirm.

That may be so (And I have Kai's document as well), but as I keep on saying, and knowing users it's bound to happen - what happens if they log off of SAP and/or turn the PC off ?

Since the solution requires the PC to be connected to the network all the time (assuming the background job could run during non work hours), this presents a potential security risk unless the PC is located in a locked office.

Which is another point about downloading from background jobs.

I think that yes it's technicallly possible, yes it's nice to say to someone 'Hey - I can download stuff in the background' but practically it's a non starter because of users and security issues.

Dear all:
The method described is neat, but not a download. It is a server RFC that shoves data across which is then stored. Likewise you can make your PC an FTP server and FTP the file across in background. Same concerns, still not a download. A true download would be a program that saves a file to your local workstation or PC.

IMHO you cannot download, but you can RFC and FTP in background (old news). And even then - as pointed out by others - it may not be the smartest thing to do. Why not write a file during processing and manually pick it up (download) later? If automation is critical, do not rely on your PC being turned on and connected.

Regards,
Wolfgang
