OS/DB migration - Oracle log shipping

Postby tlluride » Thu Jan 26, 2012 3:04 pm

We have ECC5 landscape running on HPUX/Oracle, going to migrate them to Red Hat linux and stay on Oracle. Is it possible to do oracle log shipping when you are doing an SAP OS/DB migration, considering the Database isnt changing. Example

Shutdown SAP
OS/DB migration export Database to OS
Bring up SAP on current (old) system and resume productive operations
SAP OS/DB import Export files onto source side
Apply archive logs
week later shutdows SAP on source, apply archives and bring up SAP on Linux side

Is this type of migration doable under the SAP OS/DB migration process??

Thanks

Bob

nope, as soon as Oracle is started, you cannot apply offline redologs. this is impossible by design.

Can Database be brought up as standby and archives applied, or is this not even an option when doing os/db migration. I know that you cant apply archives once DB is opened.

Hi,

using OS/DB migration, this uses SAPINST which needs to create a brand new DB and start it in order to load data.

so, no, this won't work neither.

you will need to practice this migration many times and try to optimize time of loads. when you get the perfect recipe, you run it in PROD.

There are ways to optimize your loads. I never did that myself but I know a Basis that did that and he reduced his load time by more than half.

The Oracle ports/architectures are different.

You cannot apply redo-log generated in Oracle/HP-UX to a Oracle/RedHat database.

I think Oracle Dataguard from 11g has mixed platform capability.
