Hello everyone,
I have Windows XP with Office 2010 installed. I have tried everything I could find at the SAP AG et al site(s) but BEX does not work. i.e. the add-ins in excel just ...sit there, doing nothing (they might as well be Greek civil servants). Any ideas/help please?

try with SAPGUI 7.20 with patch 1 or 2.

I did - it was mentioned in the SAP forums website. No luck.
