what on earth is the 'Display depth' means in OM report?

Hi, all:

pls forgive my foolish question, i just can not understand the paramenter 'Display depth of structure" for org. management.

according to the F1 of it,If the field contains a 3, only the top 3 levels of the structure are documented in an inquiry/report.

what does the top 3 levels mean?

maybe i am too foolish to understand this

The display depth is the depth you want the report to search for.
This according to your organizational entities.
If you pick the director department (on top) en say depth 3, the system will look 3 up to 3 entities below the director department.

but i think if the display depth work as you describe, then it should not be called Depth,

say Org. unit Headquarter has 5 sub division, each of them of sub divisions as well, so when evaluate this structure, if i set the Display depth to 3, what is the expected result?

according to your answer, that only Direct Division 1-3 of headerquarter will be retrieved,

But my understanding is that of the 5 direct sub divisions together with
their sub divisions will be retrieved.

this really annoying me, think about if there are position at each level,
will the position be treated as entities in the level for determine the depth?
