End product with variable packaging

Postby becca656 » Sat Mar 29, 2014 7:09 pm

Our client manufactures an end product in which the packaging changes seasonally.

Each quarter, the packaging changes to reflect a change in the graphics on the packaging. The product itself does not change. The production planner currently manages the changeover manually when releasing orders to production. The change takes place quarterly and only current season packaging may be distributed or manufactured during the season (clean cut off).

The sales order does not reflect this seasonality. The sales order uses only the root material number, which does not indicate the season. This is strictly a packaging mandate which the customer does not care about. Once the product has left the distribution center, the seasonality makes no difference in the field.

Currently, a work order is created for the product and the packaging is manually added to the order, dependent on the season. I am thinking, in SAP, that something like a variant or multiple BOM would allow us to continue manufacturing the end product without regard to the packaging, until we have to select the packaging to create the production or process order.

So, with this situation of having a single product with four packaging standards, one standard used at a time for a few months, i am looking for a recommendation for managing the material BOM.

Sounds like a perfect case for using parameter effectivity. You will probably need to create a custom field and populate it with the correct 'season' based on date (or whatever their criteria may be).

Good luck!
