CAD to SAP Integration- Role of SAP CAD Desktop

Postby LAT123 » Mon Jan 06, 2014 5:02 pm

Hi All,

We are exploring multiple options to integrate CAD system with SAP.. for example CAD to third party PLM tool to SAP, CAD to SAP direct integration etc..

I read the SAP help about CAD Desktop and it explains that CAD Desktop is an user interface for the integration between CAD system and SAP PLM and has features to access the SAP info directly in CAD and also enables creating materials / documents etc in SAP directly from CAD system ..

AT the same time i read about the CAD to SAP integration softwares like for example "Cideon" which provides a connector between various CAD tools (Auto CAD Solid works etc) and user interface to manage the process .. Looking for clarity on following.. Appreciate your time and help on this..

1) if SAP has CAD Desktop as an integration layer , what is the purpose of third party integration software like Cideon? Does third party software like Cideon has additional features not available in SAP CAD Desktop ?

2) What is the role of SAP CAD Desktop tool if a third part integration software like Cideon is used? SAP CAD Desktop and third party tools are both complimentary or mutually exclusive solutions?

3) or SAP's CAD Desktop tool is just a framework on which third party integration software like Cideon are built?

If there is any document that clarifies on above point and provides architectural clarity in general that would help.. Appreciate your feedback..

Thanks
Lat
