Customer Master Create/Change Process

I'm interested in hearing how your companies handle the requesting, creating and changing of Customer Masters. For materials and vendors we use SAP Workflow (highly customized) but we have nothing for customers. Currently the process is an Excel form that customer service has to fill in and then my master data team creates the customer master in SAP. We very much want to improve on this process but without purchasing any new outside tools. So what is your process?
