Problem with a characteristic

I have a characteristic with a numeric data type format that was recently changed. The Number of characters was increased, specifically the decimal places was increased from 2 to 3. This was a mistake. I need to change it back from 3 to 2. However, SAP tells me this is not possible. Any idea how to get around this?

For my point of view, it's not possible to decrease the number of characters in a characteristic
