Visit the following link for more details: http://saptrainingsonline.com/sap-xi-pi ... sap-xi-pi/

SAP XI PI Adapters Overview:
Adapters are used to convert XML and HTTP-based messages to the specific protocols and formats of these systems and the other way around.
XI Adapters enables compatibility between the XI integration server and the application system.
The XI Integration Server itself would have very little purpose if the surrounding adapters were not present.
Adapter details we will provide in Sender/Receiver communication Channel

JDBC Adapter Overview and Usage:

Pre-requisites:

The JDBC driver for the database that you want to connect should be installed.
The required Java libraries are product-specific and must be obtained from the database vendor.
Deploy the Java libraries on the J2EE server so that the JDBC adapter can access the required Java classes at runtime.
The JDBC adapter enables you to connect database systems to the Integration Server.
The adapter converts database content to XML messages and the other way around.
A special XML format is defined for content coming from the Integration Server, this format enables SQL INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT, DELETE, or stored procedure statements to be processed.
A message is always processed in exactly one database transaction.
