How many of you use Reference users ?

Post by AJToomey » Wed May 11, 2011 8:59 am

Well - I guess a few of you know about the user type of reference user and that it
can be used to assign roles to a user by association.

I'm personally not too keen on it as it's seems like security by the back door and is not very
transparent.

So - my question is :

How many of you out there make use of this and have you seem it in used at many of the
companies that you have worked at ?

Many Thanks

I have only seen reference users once, at a client where they took care of holiday replaments by hooking up the user that was replaced onto the account of the one replacing the holiday-er. But since there are no dates on this field I never advise on using it.

Mr Toomey,

I've used them a couple of times in the past as a mechanism for adding emergency access to userID's but in general I don't use them during normal operations. I've heard mention of people using them to extend the 312 profile limit but can't vouch for it myself. Something I have seen recently is this solution being used to provide a standard level of access to a large number of users. I know there are a couple of solutions out there which have massive numbers of users that have very set levels of access and assigning the access through this method is more performant than if 1 role was assigned to 200k+ users.

Cheers

I've seen them often, but often limited to a few accounts. The Reference accounts can't be used for log-in so I'm curious why you see this as a back door?

Can't see the point. It's easy enough to copy an existing user with the same access that you want.

It wouldn't have made any difference if I hadn't, there was a wife-provoked interface of the nearside with a large girder recently. No need for tyres when it's 1 month+ in the bodyshop :(
