My wish list... can anyone help?.

Post by DrSidewalk » Wed Mar 20, 2013 9:21 am

This is completely illegal, but, I supply my father-in-law with documentary's (mainly BBC), but some from other channels and burn them to DVD for him. I guess that as he pays his TV licence it may not be that illegal. Anyway, I would like to install one of those media centers that would allow him to store the documentary's on the Hard disk and then be able to play them back at any time. There are a number of these, for example, Iomega Screenplay MX HD Media Player - 1TB.
However, I would like one with Wi-fi and the feature whereby I can connect to it from the internet and place media onto it, obviously via a password firewall, like you can with most NAS drives. Is there such a product does anyone know?

Needless to say the media center will need to be controlled via remote control, output via HDMI and support HD (1080P) as well as support most, if not all the common media formats. I realise this is not asking a lot of a media center, but having it wirelessly linked and being able to connect from the outside/internet is probably going to make the search difficult. But, if anyone happens to know of such a product then do please let me know.

Hi Dr!

check these people out! http://www.my-htpc.co.uk/
they offer remote support by connecting to the PC....

or from Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hewlett-Packard ... _lmf_tit_2
"A powerful home server providing access to personal documents and digital entertainment from anywhere in the world"

you can easily add a remote control using usb... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Computer-Remote ... B004B9FPIS

i guess if you want to upload you need to secure FTP with static IP and route via the Wi-Fi to get there!

I use an Iomega 4Tb NAS drive connected directly to my router. The software provided basically maps it to a drive on your laptop and can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. It has a built in firewall and can host multiple users with different access rights.

I guess the media software is the least of your problem.

I had such a setup, but was running that on Windows Server. Problem with remote access was the ever changing IP address, thus I looked for a software that mails me the new IP addy each time it changes. Thus I could always use that to access the Server.

I had an all fancy HP LCD with network card. Hooked it up to my router and due to the network abilities, I could browse the contents of the media center via the TV remote.
No need to even touch the PC.

Every new movie got loaded into the respective path of the media center and was immediately available.

Mediaserver: TVERSITY
IP Address: Getmyip

I am big on DVD ever since I worked at UNIVERSAL. Got sh*t load of external drives.
As for ripping them: ANYDVD

if Dad likes foreign TV via PC, keep in mind that a lot of channels don't stream due to license issues
http://www.shadownet.ro/channels.php
can be displayed on the big screen through HDMI. Live TV, no license issues.
Ideal for soccer or the next Olympics

For recording the whole stuff use HIDOWNLOAD

Oh, and if you buy all the stuff, it is perfectly legal. All the Software is fairly cheap. Guess less than $100.

Hope that helps

Im pretty sure you can do all that with computers
In my opinion, Pepper Spray is underutilized as an effective tool for scope control
