Is the SAP market picking up?.

Post by Dr Sidewalk » Thu Aug 19, 2010 4:28 am

We've had three consultants hand in their notice this month (2xSD & 1xFI), all off to other consultancies. I assume the SAP market has picked up a little, although these are all permanent positions.

Has anyone else noticed this trend in the permy or contract market?.

Yes, I think it has picked up a bit. I think the email traffic I get from agencies has increased. What's more important I think is that it appears the rates have stabilized a bit and are firming up. While some are still asking for ridiculous rates, I think it's turning back in favor of the consultant a bit.

I imagine the hires you saw go out the door are more a function of delayed hiring as opposed to a market pick-up. I think a lot of places had spots but had hiring freezes in place. Or they were dealing with across the board budget cuts and delayed hirings to meet the cuts. Now that it "appears" we are working out of this recession, companies are slowly begining to fill these spots.

The same goes for projects as I think a lot of projects and short-term needs were put on hold. Now, either out of necessity or confidence in the future, some of these projects are begining and special projects or short-term needs are being addressed.

But it could all be my imagination!

I thought I had, but I tried to match one suitable Basis resource with an advertised role in the SF Jobs forum. No success. My enquiry is still in his unread PM mail ****

I was thinking....(that's usually a bad thing for someone somewhere..)

We do have a job posting forum and while it might be subject to body shops and questionable posters, I wonder how the number of posts per momth in our SAP Fans Jobs forum would chart out compared to the economy over the past 2-3 years. Would an increase in postings correlate well to the market strength?

Maybe an SAPfans index could be developed somehow.

Speaking of index (at least ABAP forum), i feel it is coming to life slowly. Definitely more post traffic then half a year ago

Looks like your enthusiasm is passed forward, so you can think of yourself as SAP marked driver in a way :)

The market is definitely picking up. In the security area a few of the SI's have more work than they can deliver effectively (same story as usual then) and are recruiting like crazy.

Probably depends on where you are and which SAP skills you have.

We have the same strong contract business as always, but from former customers. Not better, not worse. A lot more enquiries from agencies but the last years no results with them - hope these times separate the wheat from the chaff.

Another indicator might be that SAP AG is hiring again.

Want the numbers over the last year on a daily basis? I have been keeping Excel-statistics on traffic here for more than a year. In a couple of weeks I could send you the file (am on sick-leave right now).

OTOH- if you take a look at alexa, the traffic has definitely increased.

Well, since starting this post I've been constantly wathcing the market.

There does seem to be some pickup in the Permanent market. There's been a big drop in the use of contractors (as I'm sure you know) and a big increase in the number of mid-range consultancy usage, hence most of the SAP jobs that I've seen do seem to be with mid-size consultancies on a permanent basis, and the rest being for end clients, although mainly for very larger companies.

Regards
