It depends how your characteristic is defined.

In general:

First you create a class (trx. CL01 / CL02) for example Z_XX
Then you create the characteristic (trx. CT04) and define the characteristic's values. This can be done manually (allowed values) or referring to a SAP table (retrieveable via SE11) and table fields.
Be aware that you can choose: multiple values allowed / single value allowed, entry required, entry format, etc.

At least the characteristic must be set up to be linked into a Class type that refers to the material master (001, 026 (=retail), 300 (= variant configuration). Then the charactersitic should be adopted in the class Z_XX you created earlier.

Then the Class Z_XX (and its characteristic) should be linked to the object MATERIAL. This can be achieved by using trx CL20N where you can enter a material number and slecet a class type. Mostly class type 001 is being used. Then assign the class Z_XX and the material number has a classfication linked.

When you use MM02, go to the tab classification and select the characteristic value(s) you require for this specific material number.

This is a general andswer, but I hope it helps.

You should be able to linked it via a check table in characteristics. We regularly link to USR01 (User table) for example.
