Setup DMS

Hi Guys,
I need some help here, haven't worked on DMS and have a requirement, went through the SAP Help, but it's a bit too complex and detailed which I cannot go into at this moment.

I need to set up documents, which will be on an external server and linked into SAP. Link has to be used for interface with an external SQL system which is going to point to that link when it runs its application and SAP will use that as well.

Need a direction to start on in ..
