BW/APO Integration Question (Blank Characteristics)

Hi, I know that you are not supposed to have blank characteristic values in APO so we are planning on populating the values coming in from BW with 999's. The problem is that when we bring back in the APO data to BW and compare it to the original BW data they do not match because the APO data has 999's now and the BW has Spaces for values.

I am thinking we need to reset the incoming APO data to spaces if the values are 999's. This just seems like a pain since we have code on both platforms.

Can anyone tell me what they are doing in this kind of scenario?
