Masters degree thesis BW request

Postby audere » Fri Oct 20, 2006 3:38 am

Hi all,
Thought of placing this post in the education forum, but am thinking it makes more sense to post to those with actual BW real world exposure (snowy & other mods, if you think this should be in education forum, then please redirect).

Briefly, I'm on a Masters degree program in finance. For my thesis I'm very keen on using my IT experience to differentiate myself from the group. Conceptually, I'm mulling over building a BW system that will "slice and dice" vast data and present it then to Matlab - the software package we use for statistics etc. and which our lecturers are most keen for us to use. Ideally I'm looking to place my research in the Risk management area, but the BW/Matlab link would still apply.

So have any of you guys heard of - or preferably, worked on - projects whereby BW fed data into Matlab? I'm aware of how Matlab can read Excel files etc but would it be able to process the large data output from the BW?

Anything you may have to impart in this matter most appreciated.

regards,
audere

Hi,

Just so you are aware, excel has a limitation of 65,000 rows.

Im not familiar with the matlab thing but yes BW can send data to other external systems.

Afaik Matlab offers interfaces to the following programming languages:
(mostly Windows): C, Fortran, Java, DDE (Dynamical Data Exchange). And also COM technology (ActiveX), when Matlab can serve either as server or as client.
See also http://www.mathworks.com/support/books/ for more information.

you can create a flat file or stick the data onto a server which could feed matalabe using open hub or RSCM Bapi.

On your thesis, you have a question on how Matlab can read Excel files. I think it is all because of Linux. But I don't have an idea on how it will work. Good luck to your thesis!
