For the moment, you should download it in .xls file.

The Excel 2007 can open file from old version... so what's the problem with your user ???

You can also telle to your user, "You can't have every thing that you want "

Tell them SAP does not support xlsx files.

I have a custom program that downloads DMS documents. I can work around the xlsx issue by looking at the file extension of the original document.

I also want to say that not all advice is good advice. If i said anything remotely like this to my clients I would get fired.

I'm sorry to say that sometimes the client is just plain wrong. They often want to use SAP as a large Excel-based paper system rather than as an ERP system and it is our responsibility as professionals to help them understand that sometimes what they are asking for is not in their best interests in the long run. If at the end of the day they refuse to take good advice then at least it has been formally communicated to them the consequence of their decision. IMO it is unprofessional to just "do the job" one must always strive to do the job well and offer the best possible ROI for the client, even if this sometimes means challenging their expectations.
Kind Regards

Use OLE. If they have Excel 2007 installed on their system it should save as xlsx. If they don't, use one of the gui support services to rename it as xlsx and then let excel sort it out.......

You can OLE Function Module...

EXCEL_OLE_STANDARD_DAT

This will help you save the file in .xlsx format....

Try XLSX Workbench (see also http://scn.sap.com/community/abap/blog/2014/04/22/xlsx-workbench )
The tool allows you to generate an excel-file with extension .xlsx from SAP (without any OLE and VBA).
