UID's for orasid and sapsid on unix

Postby tlluride » Mon Feb 10, 2014 3:46 pm

I know that if you have a sap system that has CI/MS and app servers you would want orasid and sapsid to have UID on all servers supporting that system. But would you want the DEV and QAS system also to have the same UID's. For example prdadm would have uid 1001 in DEV, TST and PRD.

We also had them in same group (sapsys) but we would have uniquie UID's in the different systems.

Hello,

it is the good old question about system security versus system usability.

All depends on your (I mean the company's) security policy.

if the devadm and prdadm has same UID then there will be no issue while accessing transport requests or any other interface files.
On other hand you'll be never sure about the source of a file in a shared file system. Does it contain live (qualified!) data or it is only a junk created by developer in a wrong directory?

Hello,

I agree with Zav here, but let me add one more point to consider:

At some day your IT organization might decide to choose a single source of user administration, like LDAP, and connect the Unix hosts to it.
We did that a few years ago; all the Unix users (except for root and a few other system users) have been removed from /etc/passwd.

In a case like this the process of transition will be smoother if:
1) Every user like prdadm has the same uid and gid on all the hosts involved.
2) Different users like prdadm and devadm have different uid.
