DR server replacement

Postby Bill1976 » Fri Apr 19, 2013 10:01 am

Hello All,

Our R/3 4.70 x200 SR1 instance is running Oracle under HPUX 11.31 IA64. Our DR instance was running under HPUX 11.11 PA-RISC. The DR server was old and needs to be replaced. The thought is to go virtual for the DR replacement server running Linux. The manager is thinking to restore the datafiles from Oracle under HPUX 11.31 IA64 to the Linux server and replacing the Oracle binaries for Linux and the SAP Kernel for Linux.

I am thinking a fresh install.

Your thoughts?

Best regards,

Oracle 11g Data Guard supports heterogeneous processor architectures & operating systems (couldn't get the metalink). However, SAP Note 592393 seems to disagree:

Excerpt from the note:
15. Between which operating systems are homogeneous system copies and the structure of a standby database scenario possible?

Homogeneous system copies may only be carried out between systems with the same operating system. Standby databases must also run on the same operating system as the primary database. Differences within an operating system are generally allowed:

Different releases (for example, AIX 4.3 versus AIX 5.2); exception: You cannot combine HP-UX 10.20 and HP-UX 11.0 or higher.

Copying between different operating systems is possible due to transportable tablespaces (Note 1003028).

You can only change from 32-bit to 64-bit or vice versa on the basis of an offline backup, while the use of an online backup is not supported. Oracle supports the 32-bit primary database with the 64-bit standby database and vice versa (My Oracle Support (MOS) documents 414043.1 and 413484.1).

A side note:
- Having different platform for D/R solution does not look very ... er ... effective. The replacement server will arrive before you get the system work on D/R host.

back to main topic:
The view V$TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORM contains the list of platforms where you can transport the tablespaces. If the Endian format is not same then datafiles have to be converted before opening the database.

the whole procedure is described in several places ... the RMAN supports it also.

you can minimize the downtime by applying delta backups to the target database but it works only if target database runs on Linux with installed EXADATA Database Machine (not part of SAP License!).
