Derailing this thread with a serious answer, my take on the difference is this:

BASIS Administrator:
Has the skills to maintain a system on a day-to-day basis, monitoring problems, implementing support packages, kernel patches, etc. Usually permanent employees of SAP customers, occasionally contracting.

BASIS Consultant:
Administration skills + the ability to perform implementations and upgrades. Usually contractors or employees of consulting companies.
Get paid more.

The differences I've described aren't set, just based on my observations based on job descriptions and advertisements. BASIS is a bit of a black art to people who don't do it, particularly recruiters and IT managers of small SAP installations.

I quite often see job advertisements for permanent BASIS admins offering pretty ordinary pay, but demanding the skills of a 'consultant' + certification! This obviously shows how little they understand the skills and the role.

...contractors get paid more...

Also, contractors don't get overtime, paid holidays, parental leave, sick leave, pension contributions, unemployment benefit, expenses, bonuses, Christmas party invites, job security, a home life, etc... :?

Have I missed any out, seany??? :P

Basis Administrators always have to leave earlier than everyone else at the end of the day because they have a bus to catch.

Basis Consultants always have to leave earlier than everyone else at the end of the day because they have a plane to catch.

But truly excellent Basis consultants are in at work by 7am, and don't leave until well after everyone else on the project. We have to do a lot of work outside the window of users.

Yes, and truly excellent ABAPers are in at work at 5am, and don't leave until well after everyone else on the building. THEY have to do a lot of work outside the basis' window. Things like download RPGs and pr0n

BTW, truly excellent ??? are a fake, you can find two kinds of ???: the good ones (people from GD) and the rest ones

Yes, arrive at 7am, browse the internet for 2 hours until everyone else arrives. Then when everyone else goes home at 5pm, browse the internet for another hour or so & bill the customer for the whole day.
