Enterprise Organization

I'm interested to know if the enterprise organization functionality can be used to create alternate hierarchies for reporting. My customers want a hierarchy structure separate from the standard cost center hierarchy that mimics the company's organizational structure. I thought i could use enterprise organization to create organization units and then assign cost centers under the units. Ultimately, using this alternate hierarchy for reporting via report painter/writer.
Is this the intent of the functionality? The help hasn't been too clear on this.
